The Lemberg, at around 420 m the highest elevation of the Nahe Valley, houses not only numerous mining features but also a cultural-historical gem: a medieval cinnabar mine, the Schmittenstollen - the only mercury mine in Western Europe that has been developed as a visitor mine.
The cult site dedicated to the god Mercury on the Lemberg suggests that the Romans may have already engaged in mining here. However, the documented history of the mine dates back to the 15th century. In three major operating periods – most recently from 1936 to 1942 – cinnabar ores were extracted at the Lemberg.
In the Schmittenstollen, which is now accessible to visitors, the various epochs of mining can be impressively traced: alongside the laboriously excavated tunnels of the late Middle Ages, sections of the mine that were worked on in the 20th century with machines and explosives have also been preserved.
The underground experience, accompanied by knowledgeable guides, provides a vivid impression of the harsh conditions under which generations of miners have wrested ore from the Lemberg over centuries.
With a constant temperature of about 8 °C and exceptionally pure air, the visit also offers a refreshing experience – especially for allergy sufferers.
A varied hiking trail with magnificent views of the Nahe Valley and some "surprising discoveries" along the way leads from the reservoir to the mine in about 45 minutes. Alternatively, the visitor mine can be easily reached by bus or car via Feilbingert to the forest parking lot.
❗ The visitor mine also invites you to linger gastronomically: In the midst of nature, guests are welcomed to a cozy wine and beer garden with homemade dishes, freshly baked cakes, local beers, and regional Nahe wines – ideal for relaxing and enjoying after visiting the Schmittenstollen.
It is also well-suited for company outings, group trips, and family celebrations.
For larger groups, prior coordination with the tenant Michael Kammerowski at ☎️ 0162-5409739 is recommended. More information at: www.bergwerksschaenke-schmittenstollen.de.
