Werner Chapel

Gothic church ruin from 1293 in a picturesque view. Its construction is based on the Werner legend,...

The ruins of the high Gothic church, located above the town in the vineyards, appear delicate and intricate. Construction began shortly after 1287, prompted by the murder of the boy Werner. His death was unjustly attributed to the Jewish community of Oberwesel without any evidence. During the ensuing unrest, forty people lost their lives. At the same time, pilgrimages to the grave of Werner, who was buried there, began. The chapel is a well-known symbol of Rhine Romanticism.
