Wildenburg Castle

Wildenburg was built in the Middle Ages in 1330 by Wildgraf Friedrich von Kyrburg. After a long history of destruction, reconstruction, and changes of ownership, it came into the possession of the Hunsrückverein in 1963.

The prominent landmark of Wildenburg is a 22-meter-high tower on the quartzite rock of Wildenburgkopf. On clear days, there is a wide view over the Idar high plateau to Erbeskopf, the highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate, Donnersberg in the Palatinate, Rotenfels near Bad Kreuznach, and Schaumberg near Tholey in Saarland. The tower is open year-round and can be climbed for free.

Tip: Visit the wildlife enclosure at the foot of Wildenburg.

Accessibility by public transport: Bus lines 840, 890, 899, stop: Kempfeld Wildenburg
