Winterburg is first mentioned in 1325 as a hunting and winter residence of the Counts of Sponheim. Count Johannes of Sponheim had taken the castle with a mill and valley as a fief from Archbishop Baldwin of Trier. The castle survived the Thirty Years' War intact. Under General Mèlac, the old castle was burned down in 1689. A new administrative building was constructed on the castle of the Counts of Sponheim in 1747. It has been used as a school camp since 1959. Only a few remnants of the old castle walls remain.
