Additional information

From the hiking portal, we first cross the road at the fire station. We reach the stone sculpture park of the internationally renowned sculptor couple Kubach-Wilmsen via meadow paths with a short ascent - a fascinating land art concept. The path now leads down into the Nahe valley and follows it towards the Rotenfels cliff. Standing under the Rotenfels, the rock massif appears particularly impressive. We make our way up to the Ebernburg viewpoint through the Nahe meadows and the narrow alleys and stairs of the castle village. Here, one enjoys a magnificent view over the village in front of the majestic Rotenfels. The path leads back to the hiking portal along the castle walls and through vineyards.

Flooding:

During rainy periods, parts of the path may be affected by moisture. In case of flooding in the Nahe floodplain, please divert to the bike path on the higher old railway embankment. The detour is signposted. The critical water levels for walkability can be found at Hochwasser-rlp.de. The critical levels are Boos from 2.00 meters, Bad Kreuznach from 3.50 meters. Above these water levels, the paths become very difficult to pass, and one should choose the detour.

Oak processionary moth:

Warning: Oak trees can be extensively infested by the oak processionary moth. The caterpillar of the oak processionary moth poses a health risk. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars contain a nettle toxin. They can also be carried by the wind. Contact with the caterpillars can be harmful to humans and pets. The most common condition is caterpillar dermatitis with symptoms such as: skin rashes and redness, slight swelling of the skin, hives, itching, and burning all over the body. If the stinging hairs (which contain Thaumatopoein) are inhaled, this can lead to irritation of the oral and nasal mucosa, bronchitis, asthma, or even an allergic shock. Even after the life cycle of the pupa, caterpillar, and moth, the empty webs with their stinging hairs pose a risk for a long time.

Precautions:

  •  Pay attention to warning signs
  • Avoid infested oaks (do not use seating areas nearby)
  • Caterpillars and webs must not be touched (never attempt to destroy webs yourself)
  • Do not sit or lay on the ground near infested oaks
  • Protect your body with clothing (neck, arms)
  • Keep pets on a leash, stay on the path
  • Report findings. These can possibly be removed professionally with special equipment, and endangered areas can be marked.
  • If you come into contact with the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, you should change your clothes and shower
  • Wash clothes at a minimum of 60°C

Sturdy footwear with good tread that can also withstand wet areas is recommended.

Stop by the castle tavern or one of the quaint wine locales, and also visit the stone sculpture museum on weekends.
