From 1985 to 1990, the first scientific archaeological excavations took place at Disibodenberg by the then State Office for Monument Preservation in Mainz. Dr. Eberhard J. Nikitsch from the Academy of Sciences in Mainz was responsible for the publication of more than 60 medieval grave slabs found, translated their Latin inscriptions, and thus added numerous new pieces to the puzzle of the monastery's history. Through his scientific research, he helped to locate Hildegard's first residence (the cell). As an 'insider', Dr. Nikitsch also knows many exciting details about the archaeology of the monastery ruins, which is considered one of the largest in Germany.
