St. Anna Church

The oldest filial church in Morbach is mentioned in a document from the year 1282.
This church is dedicated to Saint Ada - Adula. Morbach was part of the parish of Bischofsdhron.
While Saint Adula is still mentioned in 1374, Saint Agatha appears in a visitation report in 1569 as the patroness.
In 1669, both Saint Agatha and Saint Anna are mentioned. By 1715, only Saint Anna is referred to. Philipp di Lorenzi writes in his "History of the Parishes of the Diocese of Trier" that it was not until 1715 that a "permanent clergyman," who was also a "school teacher," settled at the chapel in Morbach.
With the construction of the postal road (now part of B269) from Birkenfeld through Morbach to Bernkastel by Napoleon, the significance of the previously quiet farming village grew. In 1830, Morbach had 571 inhabitants with 92 households. Due to its now growing importance, Morbach was to become a parish center. Thus, in this year, the construction of the church in its current basic form began. On September 6, 1834, the church was consecrated; on the same date, Morbach became an independent parish center. Saint Anna was retained as the patroness of the Morbach church.
The culturally and historically valuable piece of the current church is the "Rascheit Epitaph" made of Trier sandstone from the year 1571, which stands on the south wall of the nave. It likely comes from an early work of the court Trier state sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann.
It is worth mentioning that the side altars, the confessionals, and the pulpit in front of the altar come from the former Morbach art joinery and sculpture workshop ("Kirchen Mettler"). The art workshop was located in close proximity in the beautiful half-timbered house at Unteren Markt.
The wood sculptor Rudolf Höfle, who created the stone relief of Saint George as the dragon slayer on the front of the church, originally also came from the Mettler workshop.
The church is open during the day at the side entrance from "Platz Pont-sur-Yonne".
