Fatima Chapel

In the years 1931/32, the farmer Johann Werner, a widower at the age of 63, built a wayside shrine to the Mother of God on his property, about 2 km from Schillingen.

Every evening he prayed the rosary here, and soon other men from the village joined him in his rosary prayers.
Following the example of Klaus von der Flüe, he built a simple hut where he lived in the summer. When he died in October 1933, the men from the village continued the rosary prayers. They replaced the wayside shrine with a grotto made of stones. On Trinity Sunday in 1936, a statue of the “Dear Lady of Fatima” from Fatima (Portugal) was placed in the grotto and consecrated.

After the war, especially with donations from two daughters of Johann Werner, who had already emigrated to America in 1926, the chapel in front of the grotto was built from solid stones. On Pentecost Monday, May 14, 1951, the chapel was consecrated.
In 1972, the chapel along with the entire property was transferred to the ownership of the church community.

The chapel has remained a place of retreat to this day.
