Haag has been part of the unified community of Morbach since 1975.
Since the Middle Ages, a chapel in Haag was a branch of the parish of Berglicht. In 1723, Haag, like Elzerath, became part of a new parish based in Merscheid. Later, Haag received a vicar who was also responsible for the winter school. In 1803, after long efforts, Haag became an independent parish.
After a major village fire in 1764, a 19.50 m long and 6.50 m wide church was built in 1766, which had to be fundamentally restored in the mid-19th century and was in poor condition at the beginning of the 20th century.
During the difficult period after World War I from 1924-26, the construction of the current church, dedicated to Bishop Kunibert of Cologne (7th century), took place according to plans by the Mainz architects Becker and Falkowski.
The spacious hall building, with its baroque style, appears bright and friendly to us; sunlight floods through the beautiful colored stained glass windows that depict the Beatitudes.
The furnishings made nearby in Haag make St. Kunibert something special! The altars were newly crafted by the woodcarving company Mettler from Morbach; the consecration of the high altar with its large statue of Christ took place on Pentecost 1933. In addition, Mettler provided a Marian altar and a Joseph altar as side altars, along with other figures. The execution was done by the sculptor Rudolf Höfle (1908-96), who worked at Mettler and came from Bavaria. In 1955, the reliefs of the 12 apostles were added, attached to the organ loft, and in 1962, the Stations of the Cross were added by the now independent master Höfle. A simple yet expressive visual language!
It is a blessing that all of this has been preserved! Today, one can hardly sense that St. Kunibert was almost completely destroyed in a severe disaster. In 1951, the events of 1764 repeated themselves (see above), and five farms and the church fell victim to the fire disaster. Only the surrounding walls, the hastily secured benches, and the beloved altars remained of the church. The roof and ceiling had completely collapsed, and it was barely five minutes after the last items had been salvaged from the church; the tower had also burned down, and the bells had fallen and melted. It is astonishing that the people of Haag only needed ten months for the reconstruction - what an achievement!
In 1958, the reconstruction was crowned with the acquisition of a pipe organ with 16 registers from the company Josef Klein, Obersteinebach.
St. Kunibert in Morbach-Haag now belongs to the newly established parish of Am Haardtkopf St. Christophorus, founded on January 1, 2022. The pastor is Markus Weilhammer.
