Cross-country ski trails: there is the possibility for cross-country skiing, but the trails are not groomed

Toboggan run: In winter, the northern slope is used for sledding, a 400 m long toboggan run attracts winter sports enthusiasts from the entire area.
As part of a small ceremony, the cross-country ski trail Soonwald at Schanzerkopf Argenthal was officially opened on November 21, 2019. The trail starts at the Schanzerkopf parking lot and leads back there. There are two route options, one with a length of 6 km and one with a length of 10 km in a beautifully scenic location.
On the initiative of the Hunsrückverein Ellern, particularly the former chairman Dr. Jürgen Ehrhard from Ellern, the idea of a cross-country ski trail was revived some time ago. Many years ago, there was already a corresponding trail designation, which could no longer be used due to the expansion of the Argenthal quarry. The current route has been implemented through exemplary cooperation between Hunsrückverein Ellern, the Soonwald-Entenpfuhl Forestry Office, the Simmern Forestry Office, the Neupfalz Forest Experience Center, the Rheinböllen Association Municipality, and the Argenthal quarry. Volunteer helpers from the Hunsrückverein took care of the signage of the route and the installation of the information sign at the beginning of the trail.
The necessary posts for the sign were provided by the Forest Experience Center, and the sign itself was financed by the State Forests. The Simmern-Rheinböllen Association Municipality takes on the liability aspect of this route, and maintenance is ensured by the Hunsrückverein Ellern. Present at the opening were Dr. Jürgen Ehrhard, Eckhard Meding, and Rolf Bergheim from the Hunsrückverein, Bernhard Frauenberger, the head of the Soonwald Forestry Office, Dieter Piroth, the head of the Forest Experience Center (not in the picture), and Arno Imig, the representative from the Rheinböllen Association Municipality.
A heartfelt thank you to all the active participants who contributed to the realization of the trail. Now we just need the snow, and then we can get started. All cross-country skiers are warmly invited. The trail will not be groomed, so the initiative of the skiers is required.
